This bird of prey dropped onto a rabbit in a local garden, feet first. It stayed for a few hours, enjoying its meal. When it wasn’t eating it flew up to the fence and sat, keeping guard. The crows circled, eyeing off the carrion but didn’t land. However, a couple of magpies weren’t intimidated and chased him away and he flew off across Dolphin Lagoon. A while later he flew back for dessert.
A bird life Australia member confirmed it as a Little Eagle.
Sadly this species has now been listed as vulnerable in Victoria.
